I'm excited to share one of the most fun and creative projects I've worked on.
I made this sculpture last year inspired by the painting 'Man with Guitar' by Georges Braque, one of the greatest exponents of cubism.
The process was crazy but at the same time makes a lot of sense. First of all, I tried to see where the hell the man and the guitar were in a painting where there are apparently no clear shapes.
After racking my brains and thinking outside the box, I managed to interpret the painting and find both the man and the guitar.
Because of the kind of shapes resembling fish scales, and the possible sea wave and ropes (which I have painted over in green), I made up the lore of the guitarist, deciding that he would be a rockstar fishman who after making it big in the deep ocean music industry, and now at retirement age, decides to try his luck on the surface playing his music for humans.
From the title of the painting and the interpretation, we know that the fishman has a guitar. But this star wouldn't have a normal guitar, so I made that up too. It's a mix of an acoustic guitar and crazy shapes like those of electric guitars.
So, since the original painting is cubist, I decided that the final sculpture would be cubist as well. That implies using simultaneous vision aka crazy perspective. I'm not going to explain how I achieved it, but depending on the angle you see the figure you see different silhouettes.
Having the 3D model of the guitar, I took the different shapes and began a process based on 3 principles:
1. Separation
2. Transformation
3. Repositioning
In this way, I took the basic shapes that made up the guitar, twisted them, duplicated them, broke them... to end up making a totally new sculpture that barely looks like a guitar.
And in fact my intention was always for the sculpture to represent the same thing as the original painting: a man with a guitar.
One of the different views of the sculpture shows a reinterpretation of my initial interpretation of the original painting.
And that's it!! Enough yapping
